Representation in media is a powerful tool that shapes our perceptions and influences how we see the world. Sadly, for too long, Indigenous cultures have been underrepresented or, worse yet, portrayed inaccurately. As a proud member of the Cup'ik/Yup'ik community and a passionate advocate for cultural preservation, I firmly believe that representation matters. It allows us to showcase the rich tapestry of traditions, stories, and values that make up our vibrant cultures.
Having Alaska Native individuals on both sides of the camera breaks down the barriers that have traditionally limited our representation. It enables us to shape the narratives surrounding our communities and challenge the dominant narratives that perpetuate misconceptions. By sharing our perspectives, we can showcase the depth, richness, and diversity of Indigenous cultures, challenging preconceived notions and fostering greater understanding and appreciation.
Cultural tourism has the potential to be a transformative experience, fostering understanding, appreciation, and connection between different communities. However, it is crucial that we approach it with respect, sensitivity, and a willingness to learn. This campaign aimed to highlight the significance of engaging with Indigenous communities on their terms, learning from their wisdom, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that preserve our environment and cultural heritage.
For me, this cultural tourism campaign has been deeply meaningful. It has allowed me to showcase the strength, resilience, and beauty of Alaska Native cultures. It has given us a platform to share our stories, traditions, and ancestral knowledge with a wider audience. Through this project, I hope to inspire others to approach cultural tourism with an open mind and heart, appreciating the diversity that makes our world so beautiful.

The inclusion of my photographs in the Travel Alaska website's cultural tourism campaign has been a significant milestone for me as an advocate for Indigenous representation and educated outreach and education. This project exemplifies the power of media in shaping narratives, creating meaningful relationships with the original stewards of the land, and fostering understanding. It serves as a reminder of the importance of respectful cultural tourism, where we engage with communities authentically and leave a positive impact on both the people and the environment.
Together, we can create a world where representation in media is not just a goal but a reality, where cultural appreciation is rooted in understanding, and where we cherish and protect the treasures of our heritage for the next ten thousand years
